It's the 12th of July, time to get messy. (insert deer-in-the-headlight look) As you likely recall from previous 12ths, I am not one who likes messes. Not one bit. BUT a challenge is only a challenge if it stretches you, and I'm up for the Hot Mess Success Challenge.
Barb, Carol, Darlene, Kelly, Terry and I create cards for the Hot Mess Success challenge each month and share them on the 12th.
It's Anything Goes - as long as there is something messy involved.
This month I decided to just experiment. Actually, this was plan B. My first plan totally failed and went into the trash. (I tried used fingernail polish and water, per a tutorial I'd seen, but I just couldn't get it to work.) Not to worry. A mess is a mess is a mess... so I was off to another plan.
I read somewhere that if you have designer paper that you don't like, alter it. Hmmmm.... interesting concept. I decided to give it a go.
For the most part, I do not like chevron papers. I know they were (and still are, I suppose) quite popular... I'm just not one that boosted them into fame. But I do have some chevron paper in my stash. This piece, for instance...
My first attempt at altering it was with Nuvo Shimmer Powder. I sprinkled four different colors onto the piece of chevron...
... and then gave it a spritz of water. I'm sorry to say, I failed to take a picture after that step, but let's just say, I wasn't super impressed. Not to worry. I have other tricks up my sleeve.
I then ran the piece through Stampin' UP's Old World Paper to give it some texture. Oops! Then I realized two things. 1.) I should have diecut it first, and 2.) I had the paper upside down.
Sooooo... I diecut the piece and then ran it through the embossing folder the right way. LOL!
I still thought the piece was lacking pizzazz (and my fingers weren't quite messy enough yet) so I then used a blending brush to add Ranger Peacock Feathers distress ink around the outer edge and also lightly over the bumps on the embossed piece.
Yep... I think that was sufficient.
The rest of the card was pretty basic, no tricks there.
Papers: Cougar 110# White and SU Coastal Cabana CS and DP from my scrap file
Nuvo Shimmer Powder: Blue Blitz, Catherine Wheel, Sunray Crossette, and Violet Brocade
Embossing Folder: SU Old World Paper
Ink (for blending): Ranger Distress Peacock Feathers
Dies: MFT Stitched Rectangle and MFT Stitched Rounded Rectangle
Embellishments: Michael's Rhinestones
Oooooh....Ahhhh!!! Not a fan of Chevrons either, but the peacock ink on the edges, plus the various techniques to distress it makes quite a difference! Simply beautiful floral coloring and the layout is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteOh my Jeanette, for someone who doesn't like to get messy or have messes you sure do a great job with your "messy cards". This is very creative and wonderful. I'm not a fan of chevrons either but you have solved this problem quite nicely. Great job on this challenge. ♥
ReplyDeleteSo glad you kept going with this Jeanette - it's a stunning card - it almost looks 3-D with the dark edging to the paper. The nail polish marbling technique is dicey - I used watercolour paper, but found that it did not adhere all that well, and after a while my 'spare' backgrounds started peeling...
ReplyDeleteStay safe

You sure are the determined lady! I love it that you continued to challenge yourself to get messy to get the fun result! Such a Sweet Card!
ReplyDeleteWhat's not to love! You may not be a chevron fan but your card came out lovely! The bold floral is a vision - and I love the nail polish techique! I did try it for this (not sure why I dind't use/post it?!) and it came out smashing - I think I'll have a redo for next month!
ReplyDeleteWhat a stunning dahlia! Beautiful, beautiful card, Jeanette!
