2020 Travel the World - Week 13

I started a Travel the World Series last year. (It should be noted that I did a similar thing in 2018, only it was the 50 states.) For 50 weeks in 2019, I visited a different country (virtually) and shared facts about that country. I then selected one tidbit of information about that week's country as inspiration for a card. Fifty weeks; fifty countries... BUT there are 195 countries in the world so that was just a little over 25% of them. Of course I couldn't stop, so this year I'm continuing with fifty more countries, one per week.

This week's country is...

Uganda

Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa. In terms of population, it is the second largest landlocked country in the world, second only to Ethiopia.

It is bordered to the east by Kenya, to the north by South Sudan, to the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to the south-west by Rwanda, and to the south by Tanzania.

In terms of land area, Uganda is roughly the size of the state of Oregon. However, Uganda has a population that is roughly ten times larger than Oregon’s!

About half of Uganda’s population is under the age of fourteen.

The country is mostly plateau with some rolling hills and low mountains. Grassland and tropical forest dominate the central region, with volcanic foothills in the east.

With eight major rivers and five huge lakes, water covers nearly one-fifth of Uganda

Lake Victoria forms the south-eastern corner of the country. It is Africa’s largest freshwater lake.

Uganda is best known for its gorillas, it also has other interesting wildlife.
Uganda is home to 11% of the world's bird population.
Uganda has 6.8% of the world's butterfly species.

Approximately half of Ugandans live on less than one dollar per day.

Uganda has one of the smallest churches in the world. Established in 1996. Bethel Church is approximately 7 1/2 feet wide and 8 feet tall.

It is impolite to simply say, “Hi.” When greeting a Ugandan, it is customary to ask, “How are you?”

It is not uncommon for Ugandans to be late – punctuality is not very important. A person may arrive 30 minutes late, or sometimes even up to two hours after they were supposed to be there.

Pointing at a Ugandan with an index finger is an insult. When pointing, the whole arm should be used.

Ugandan women are expected to dress modestly and should cover their legs. Ugandan men always wear pants, even in the hotter temperatures. Only boys wear shorts.

An English man might say he is going to spend a penny, drain the lizard, have a piddle to name a few while an American man might say he is going to take a leak. For Ugandans, their toilet euphemism is quite different. A polite Ugandan will say that he is going to make a short call.
In the Western world, a rolex is a watch but in Uganda, a rolex is a very delicious omelette that locals make with pepper, tomatoes, cabbage and onion. It comes wrapped in a chapatti.

Peanuts are called g-nuts in Uganda.

If a Ugandan offers you a dish of fried grasshoppers when you visit, this signals that you are a special guest. Grasshoppers to Ugandans are like hotdogs to Americans. This treat is especially popular on the streets during the rainy time when grasshoppers are abundant.

The women of Uganda traditionally build the homes. They are responsible for constructing the walls of mud houses, while men build the roofs of these homes.

Uganda is suffering from an increase in deforestation. To reverse the effects of deforestation, policy makers have come up with a way to stop deforestation. In Uganda, for every tree cut down, you are expected to plant three more.

I decided to let this Uganda fact be the inspiration for this week's card... Bicycles, not cars, are the main mode of transportation in Uganda. With the poor road conditions that exist, these are a much cheaper and easier way to travel as they can access just about anywhere.

Petals of White

Virtual Stamp Night (on SCS) is always a lot of fun and it challenges the participants to step up their game, making more cards more quickly and trying new things. The past two days stampers have gathered (online, of course) to complete twenty challenges... and if one can't participate right then, it's okay. Playing catch up is allowed - well, for a short window of time.

I was one of those who couldn't participate in real time, but I'll try to do at least some of the challenges in a timely manner.

VSN - Florapalooza

This is the card I made for Challenge #3 (I'm not doing these in any particular order).

Challenge Title: Petals of White
 - create cards with white flowers or petals -
Hostess: Lee

There is a one-hour time limit per card.
This card took me 25 minutes to make.

Ewe Are So Sweet!

I have determined that I have three hobbies - buying stamping/cardmaking supplies, organizing stamping/cardmaking supplies, and making cards. Can anyone else relate?

AND... sometimes it seems like I do more buying (insert embarrassed face) and organizing than actually making cards. I have stamp sets that have seen very little (if any) ink. So what's the solution? For one thing, I joined Barb's Challenge Your Stash group on SCS. We have a monthly theme, chosen by one of our members, and on the 28th of the month we show what we made for that theme... but we couldn't buy a single thing to make it.

Not. a. problem. Have I mentioned I have a lot of stuff???

Barbara chose this month's theme -

"March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb."

The sky's the limit for how you interpret this theme: lions, lambs, wind, rain, spring flowers, anything that old adage makes you think of. Have fun with it!

This card features a Raisin Boat stamp set... because Saturdays are devoted to Victorine Originals/Raisin Boat on my blog. I love this cute little lamb, so it was not difficult to choose to use it. It's from the Raisin Boat Wild About Ewe, Honey! stamp set.

To make my card, I first smeared a bit of Acrylic paint onto white cardstock to create a hillside. I did this in one swift motion - kind of like a burst of March winds.

Then I stamped the lamb and sentiment (after the paint had dried of course) and added some layers of DP and CS and then added three heart-shaped brads. It was super easy to make and fun, too.

I hope Barbara and Barb and the other CYS gals like it.

Courage Takes Small Steps of Change

For the past few years I have set some personal crafting goals. This year was no exception. If you're interested in seeing all of those plans you can see them in the page at the top of this blog titled My Blog in 2020

One of the goals is a monthly series I've called

Could Ya?
Should Ya?
Would Ya?
Yea!

In this monthly series, I plan to try something out of the norm... i.e. a size of card I rarely use, a technique I've wanted to try (or try again), an unusual fold, a card for a bizarre holiday, etc. I also plan to try a new recipe on these days - not a card recipe, a kitchen recipe.

This month I decided to try something I've seen a few others doing lately - I stamped flowers with black ink on white CS... BUT I didn't color them. Another thing that I did that is not normal for me... I used absolutely NO embellishments.

And don't forget... there's the added feature of this series - try a new recipe. What's for supper? Now this month that was especially challenging. Since we're in a pandemic and our state is actually in a Shelter in Place mandate, I've not been to the store in 11 days. We have what we need, no worries. BUT we don't have a lot of unique ingredients for trying new recipes. So supper tonight is a tried and true crockpot dish (think ground sirloin patties and gravy and more) with mashed potatoes. But I am going to try a new recipe as a side - Navajo Flatbread.

In case you're wondering, last month's Pan Garlic Parmesan Chicken and Potatoes had mixed reviews from my guys. In fact, we all three really liked the potatoes fixed that way but none of us particularly liked the chicken.

Hopefully tonight's Navajo Flatbread will be a hit!

A Bouquet of Mixed Flowers

I must admit, I've been somewhat of a hoarder. Yep, it's true. Confession is good for the soul, or so they say, so I just wanted to own my hoarding tendency. BUT - this is the year! I'm going to try to do better.

See, I've been a member of the Technique Tuesday Greenhouse Society for well over a year now. I love flower stamps so it seemed like a perfect fit! Truthfully, I have used some of these stamps, but others I've been guilty of leaving un-inked. for. way. too. long. I've committed to using them this year in my Greenhouse Society series.

Since the sets arrive toward the end of the month, I actually use them the following month, so today's card is made with the February 2020 Greenhouse Society stamp set - Mixed Flower Bouquet.
