As I mentioned in last Friday's blog post, my personal 50-week States of the Union Challenge has moved to Tuesdays, so here it is. Week 7 already.
This week's state is...
Maryland
Date of Statehood: April 28, 1788
Here are some interesting things I learned about Maryland...
The Maryland state house is the oldest state capitol still in continuous legislative use.
Maryland gave up some of its land to form Washington DC.
Maryland's Mount Clare Station, built in Baltimore in 1830, was the first railroad station in the United States.
The 4.03 mile William Preston Lane Memorial (The Bay Bridge) joins the western part of Maryland to the eastern shore and crosses the Chesapeake Bay.
Maryland is famous for great seafood, especially craps. During lunch hour on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay, vendors sell almost as many crab cakes as hot dogs and hamburgers combined.
And there are these strange laws in Maryland...
- Eating while swimming in the ocean is strictly prohibited in Maryland. Unless, of course, you’re a fish.
- A woman may not go through her husband's pockets while he is sleeping.
- In Baltimore it is against the law to throw bales from second-story windows. Doing so will get you a $20 fine.
Notorious gunslinger Doc Holliday was called "Doc" because he was a dentist. He learned his trade at the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery.
The official state sport of Maryland is jousting.
In 1902 Maryland was the first state to enact Workmen's Compensation laws.
In 1805 the first practical refrigerator was invented in Baltimore.
June 24, 1784, in Baltimore, 13-year-old Edward Warren went airborne in the first successful manned balloon launch in the United States.

I've decided to go with this bit of Maryland information for my card's inspiration... America's first umbrellas were produced in Baltimore in 1828.
I have so many umbrella stamps, making it difficult to choose one. This cute little Unity stamp set had never seen ink, so I decided it was time to ink it up..
Stamp Set: Unity Rain or Shine You're a Friend of Mine stamped with Memento Tuxedo Black Ink and colored with Copic Markers and Amazapen Gel Pens
Papers: Recollections Black and White and SU Tranquil Tide CS and DP from the Heidi Grace Sunshowers Paper Pad
Embellishment: Pebbles Felt Cloud
More excellent State trivia. Your little chick is adorable! What a pretty umbrella!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun you must have researching these tit bits Jeanette - glad I don't live in Maryland with short kisses and no going through Hubby's pockets, never mind throwing the baby our ?with the bathwater???
ReplyDeleteLove your card, that is one sweet stamp, and the texture with the felt cloud is perfect
Blessings
Maxine
