Personal Challenge 2018 - Week 2

If you were at my blog last Friday, you were introduced to my personal 50-Week Challenge of 2018. If you missed it, you can read about it HERE.

In a nutshell, each week I'll create a card that is inspired by one of our 50 states. I'm doing these in the order that the states attained statehood. Last week was Delaware; this week is...

Pennsylvania
Date of Statehood: December 12, 1787

Here are some interesting tidbits I've learned about Pennsylvania...

It is the only original colony that is not bordered by the Atlantic Ocean.

Harrisburg Pennsylvania boasts the longest stone arch bridge in the entire world. It is called the Rockville Bridge.

Benjamin Franklin founded the Philadelphia Zoo, which is the first public zoo in the United States.

Pittsburg has over 300 sets of city-maintained steps, enough to be 26,000 feet tall if they were stacked on top of each other.

Shankweiler’s Drive-In in Orefield is America’s oldest drive-in movie theater in the country that is still operational. It first opened on April 15, 1934.

The oldest US gas station is found in Altoona Pennsylvania.

Other first include the first baseball stadium which was built in Pittsburg and the first computer which was used in Philadelphia in 1946.

The official state beverage is milk.

The Crayola Factory is located in the Lehigh Valley, producing nearly 3 billion crayons each year, That’s an average of 12 million daily, enough to wrap the earth six times.

The official state dog of Pennsylvania is the Great Dane. When the subject was raised for a vote in the state government, legislators reportedly stood up and “yipped, growled, and barked" their votes in favor. “The arfs have it,” said the Speaker of the House.

Hershey Pennsylvania is known as the Chocolate Capital of the United States.

Jimmy Stewart is from Indiana Pennsylvania. Each Christmas the downtown area is decorated with the theme "It's a Wonderful Life."

Hazelton Pennsylvania has a law that makes it illegal to sip a carbonated beverage while lecturing students in a school auditorium. (Makes me wonder how they go about enforcing that???)

Speaking of strange laws, it is against the law to sing in the bathtub in Pennsylvania. It is also illegal to sweep dirt under the rug.

And the bit of information that I've decided to use as my inspiration for is a unique theme park. Sesame Place in Langhorne is the only theme park based on the award-winning series, Sesame Place.

Your card is adorable!!!! My sister and BIL took my niece and nephew the summer before last. I still need to scrap those pics.

Did the most famous prison come up in your research? Quite a few years ago now, Mike and I went to Philly for the weekend and we toured the Eastern State Penitentiary, very cool but eerie place!

Loving this new series!

What a great kid's card! I loved Sesame Street when my kids were growing up Bert and Ernie was always some of their favorite characters. Interesting facts about Pennsylvania. I love strange laws but it really makes you wonder what was going on that made them make such strange laws in the first place. I wonder if they could drink carbonated beverages in a classroom but not in the auditorium. Oh the places you go (to quote Dr. Seuss)! Your journey will be such fun!

Well, I had to see if you had my home state done already, and you did! I did not know that milk was our state drink. I will tell that to my kids.

Your card is really cute and fun, always good to have a good card for a child ready!
